The notable surge can be attributed to unparalleled usage and inflation in healthcare reimbursement. For the 2022-2023 period, the SHIP plan is experiencing a deficit statewide. While the financial modeling conducted by our actuarial team was thorough, the expenses surged dramatically post-pandemic. Healthcare providers and facilities have significantly escalated their reimbursement rates over the past few years, with healthcare inflation playing a substantial role in this uptick.
Several significant expenses contribute to the heightened premiums:
- Excessive utilization of Emergency Room services.
- Increased reliance on mental health referrals within the community.
- Elevated usage of high-cost formulary drugs.
- A significant rise in specialty care referrals. Once again, post-pandemic, we're witnessing a pronounced uptick in students requiring advanced care, with more students attending remotely from beyond our campus vicinity.
